When we leave our country of birth and emigrate to a country temporarily or definitely, we can feel a mixture of emotions. Excitement, curiosity, fear, sadness, but we constantly feel lost.

Adaptation is one of the most significant stages in our process as immigrants. But at some point, we have to decide if we want to continue fitting in or stand out. Our guest is a woman who has lived in at least ten countries and has faced this process dozens of times without neglecting her identity. Today, Saskia Kremer will teach us how valuable and unique we are.

Have you heard about the third culture before? If you are an immigrant, you may have it. Listen to today's episode and find out.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • [2:25] Creating your opportunity.

After traveling the world, today's guest found herself unable to practice her profession in her country of birth. So, she decided to create her own business in Holland and started from scratch when she moved to Ireland.

  • [7:48] Sometimes, our homeland is not the best place for us.

Although many of us have beautiful memories of the country in which we were born, sometimes it is not the best place for us. Where we feel comfortable, free, happy, and have the opportunity to grow will always be the best place for us.

  • [16:16] Sacrificing who we are to fit in.

When we feel alone, we are more vulnerable to being attacked. That is why we develop a defense mechanism to protect ourselves. Frequently, we camouflage who we are so as not to feel singled out or judged; all of this ends up causing us a conflict with our identity.

  • [20:52] The balance between belonging and maintaining our identity.

It is okay to adapt to the culture and traditions of the country we inhabit. However, we must always ask ourselves, "do these changes feel good to me, or am I just changing to fit?" When we find a balance between who we are and the new knowledge and traditions we obtain from this new country that welcomed us, we create a new culture and be ourselves.

  • [29:41] Do women have advantages when emigrating?

The answer is no. We all have advantages and disadvantages alike.

  • [34:37] Self-sabotage doesn't allow us to expand.

We all have a little voice in our mind that is always full of negative comments. We must learn to identify those negative thoughts and put them aside. Remember that you are a strong person because you decided to leave your birthplace looking for a better future. You are worthy of admiration.

  • [36:23] How can we stand out?

When I speak of standing out, I am not referring to taking attitudes or doing things to make us feel superior to others. What will make you stand out is accepting and loving yourself as you are—that day, you will shine, and everyone will notice you.

  • [41:02] Podcasts, books, and people who inspire us.

Saskia's story is impressive. She had the opportunity to work with Mother Teresa at a young age, and today she lets us know that she has been an inspiration for her.
